It hopes to make a net profit of Rs1,350 crore in the whole year 1998-99 (Rs1,073 crore in the whole year 1997-98). Its earning per share is likely to be Rs21.43. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, which has a monopoly in the Delhi and Mumbai telecom sectors, is expected to start operations in the Calcutta and Chennai circles. It has announced its decision to enter cellular telephony with an airtime rate of Rs1.40 per minute. The company has about a 25 percent share in the National Telecom Network with a customer base of 3 crore. It posted a net profit of Rs1073.02 crore on an income of Rs4577.73 crore in 1997- 98.
